Notes on the 99th EasyBuild conference call, Wednesday April 11th 2018 (5pm - 6pm CET)

Attendees

Alphabetical list of attendees (4):

  • Bart Oldeman (ComputeCanada)
  • Damian Alvarez (JSC, Germany)
  • Davide Vanzo (Vanderbilt University)
  • Fotis Georgatos (Illumina, UK)

Agenda

  • (no agenda set)
  • Q&A

Bart's stuff

  • GCC with -ftree-vectorize has been merged
  • Created new toolchains that do not have MPI but have the math libraries to allow lower level software installation
  • Fotis suggests a different toolchain approach where MPI is replaced with a "fat toolchain". Just an idea...

Software stack on cloud burst

  • Davide: How to seamlessly provide the software stack on containerized instances in the cloud for job bursting?
  • Fotis: Bright Computing and GridEngine provide solutions for transparent cloud bursting (or they claim so)
  • The whole stack or layers of the stacks can be containerized and deployed through docker registry (e.g. Artifactory)

Lmod delivery framework

  • Fotis: It would be useful to share how different sites deploy Lmod on the clusters (e.g. RPM packaging) and how it is configured and customized
  • Work together as an Lmod users interest group to define a common flexible framework that would simplify the Lmod installation and customization for different sites
  • For example, Bright/Illumina collaboration: https://github.com/Bright-Computing/bic
  • Bart: A very interesting new feature on Lmod is depends_on, which will be supported in EasyBuild 3.6.0
