The functionality is effectively unsupported and unused:

  1. There are no integration tests or documentation on setting up the environment for development and testing the existing code.
  2. Unlike other supported proprietary platforms, testing and development with Azure require a paid account.
  3. Given the above, it's hard to maintain when making library-wide changes.
  4. There's no owner of the package within the team.
  5. There was not a single sharding-specific issue filed in the bug tracker.
  6. No one is using or knows of someone using it (link).
  7. The package is almost entirely decoupled from DBAL which means it can be maintained as a separate library if needed.
