This PR reworks the Markdown plugins from the horrible hack cobbled together at 1am into something that at least doesn't make me want to cry blood (cobbled together at 1am). It also rewrites the developer documentation in a way that should hopefully be readable by someone that isn't me, and fixes the heading autolink plugins that have been broken since the last release.
