chore: improve logging in getValPower

The code this PR changes has unhelpful error messages. While debugging, I needed to add logging information here,
so I think it might be useful to have this information here with this PR.
This PR is not meant to fix all logging issues in the e2e tests, but just to improve this one particular part of the code where I encountered a problem.
