Good point! I can only think of one reason to do this: When developing on the setup code, it can be helpful that the tarballs are still around after successful install (to avoid re-download). That's not a good enough reason to not delete them, though.
The ghc tars keep lying there and taking up space. Is there any use of those after the installation is successfully done?
