I have mentioned previously that we are not maintaining the gitter channel.

@Dylan-DPC We either build the community that is able to answer simple questions or we endure the infinite flow of silly requests. Alternative ideas are welcome though!

🕐 Waiting for PR status (Github check) to be set, probably by CI. Bors will automatically try to run when all required PR statuses are set.

People can ask on discord or zulip. Also clap is popular enough that people often ask questions in general rust channels and get answers for it.

@Dylan-DPC I already gave the reason for advertising gitter in a separate issue.

As long as we don't have a dedicated clap related chat, let's use gitter in the meanwhile.

Guys, can we try to be objective here?

@Dylan-DPC with all due respect, you're just discarding our move without any justification or reasoning. Do you have any objective reason not to use gittter?

My thoughts:

  • Discord. I heard it's cool, but I already mentioned that some people can't use it because they happened to have an unlucky IP. Well, unless they are willing sending their phone number to Discord staff which is a pretty touchy subject for certain kinds of people. I have at least 4 acquaintances who don't use Discord for this reason.
  • Zulip. Right now, it's entirely about development of rust-related projects, mostly rustc itself and libs. I couldn't think of any compelling arguments for mixing support chats with development chats.
  • Gitter. It leaves much to be desired, but it's good enough for "ask a question, maybe get an answer".

@CreepySkeleton
I have given the reason already but let me elaborate here:

First of all the platform -
Gitter has terrible UX and the mobile app is close to unusable. Most teams have moved away from Gitter - including the CLI WG. I've spoken to Kevin about it and they have agreed that there is no point keeping Gitter for clap.

Now with regards to clap -
We already have the CLI-WG on discord, and zulip - which means as a member, the room extends to clap as well. People are free to pop in there and ask for help. Also at some point we might have a public mailing list for the CLI WG which many members are in favour of - again this would extend to clap as well. Given the amount of options besides the issue tracker, and in future github discussions - already feels like too many options for the other maintainers and working group members to manage and moderate.
Also given that clap is largely popular, and even the newer sibling clap derive - is equivalent to structopt in terms of its API which is also popular - most users already ask their questions in general rust channels either on discord, on forums or on reddit - and we can continue encouraging people to do that. If there is anything that they would like know which requires thorough internal knowledge of clap or want to contribute to it, they can always use the issue tracker for that.
