no-push-main

Global pre-push hook preventing developers from pushing changes directly to the main branch.

                 

This repository contains a script to enforce a pre-push hook, it prevents developers from pushing changes directly to the main/master branch of a Git repository. this ensures that all changes are pushed to a separate branch and reviewed before being merged into the main branch, This helps to maintain the integrity of the main branch and reduce the risk of accidental code changes or conflicts.

Using the Hook

To use the pre-push hook, you can copy and paste the following command in your terminal:

curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ch33kaboo/no-push-main/main/script.sh >> ~/.bashrc

This will download and setup the hook on your machine. After running this command, you'll need to restart your terminal for the changes to take effect.

Removing the Hook

If you no longer want to use the no-push-main hook, you can remove it by opening your ~/.bashrc file using a text editor, Scroll through the file and look for the section of the file that contains the script, Delete the script then save. You'll need to restart your terminal for the changes to take effect.

NOTE

• the hook (so far) only works for those who use bash as their shell, the hook doesn't work with shells like Zsh or Fish ...etc .
• the hook only works when your remote repository is named origin. If you have a different remote repository name, you'll need to modify the script accordingly.

Why use this over Husky & other tools

Husky is a great tool for managing Git hooks in your projects. It allows you to define custom scripts that run automatically when certain Git commands are executed, in this case we are interested in pushing code changes, but Husky requires you to configure it separately for each project that you want to use it on.

The no-push-main hook, on the other hand, is a global hook that can be set up once and applied to all your Git projects, especially in this case (pushing changes to the main branch) is considered a bad practice no matter what project you are working on.
