Alpha pilots are the first workshops where the lesson is taught,
almost always by some or all of the original developers of the lesson.

After the feedback from these alpha pilots has been used to improve
the lesson, it can enter the beta stage, where other Instructors -
who did not have a major part in the previous development of the lesson -
teach it and provide feedback.

For more information about these pilots,
and the requirements for piloting official Carpentries lessons,
see [the Lesson Life Cycle chapter of The Carpentries Curriculum Development Handbook](https://cdh.carpentries.org/the-lesson-life-cycle.html).
Alpha pilots should be repeated until lesson content reaches a relatively stable state,
typically when lesson developers are satisfied that the lesson teaches the most important concepts and skills to its intended audience.
At this point, the wider community can be invited to test and provide feedback on the lesson’s broader teachability in _beta pilots_.

It is always easier for the creator of a set of curricular materials to use those materials,
but more difficult to communicate all of the relevant details to enable others to deliver the curriculum efficiently.
In order to ensure that our lessons are able to be taught by all appropriately experienced certified Instructors,
a lesson should be beta piloted at least twice outside of the institution in which it was developed, ideally in two different countries.

##### Requirements for Piloting New Lessons
Lessons/curricula that is being considered for adoption into a Lesson Program of The Carpentries
(i.e. that will become official curricula to be taught in Carpentries workshops)
should be tested in at least two beta pilot workshops.
At least one of these beta pilots should be observed by a member of the Curriculum Team.

Beta pilots are recommended but not required before a community-owned lesson in [The Carpentries Incubator](https://carpentries-incubator.org/) can be marked as stable.
However, lessons should be tested in at least one beta pilot before they are submitted for open peer review in [The Carpentries Lab](https://carpentries-lab.org).
