Description

When starting the Brave browser, looking at resource utilization, it eats most of the 4GBs of the RAM (the maximum a i386 processor can handle). Windows will resort to paging at this point.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Brave browser on Windows 7 Enterprise in 32-bit with 4GB RAM
  2. Open Task Manager
  3. Observe RAM usage

Actual result:

Your memory usage will have a big spike when Browser inits, then spikes down when closed.

image

Expected result:

Acceptable memory usage (Chrome and Chromium has 90% lesser usage in 32-bits)

Reproduces how often:

Easily reproduced

Brave version (brave://version info)

73.0.62.50

Reproducible on current release:

  • Does it reproduce on brave-browser dev/beta builds? Not yet tested - but probably affected as well

Website problems only:

  • Does the issue resolve itself when disabling Brave Shields? No
  • Is the issue reproducible on the latest version of Chrome? No

Additional Information

This is a fresh install on a Windows 7 Enterprise install.

Removing myself as I don't have a Win 7 x86 VM anymore. @btlechowski I believe you have one handy, when you have some time, mind going through this and see if you can reproduce anything similar in terms of Brave eating up unnecessary memory?

I simulated the conditions reported in the issue(4GB, Windows 32bit Enterprise) and I was unable to reproduce. On clean profile, all Brave processes took max 200MB.

Tested with

Brave 0.65.120 Chromium: 75.0.3770.90 (Official Build) (32-bit)
Revision a6dcaf7e3ec6f70a194cc25e8149475c6590e025-refs/branch-heads/3770@{#1003}
OS Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (Build 7601.24468)

@sr229 Did you have any pages open? Did you enable rewards?

@btlechowski no pages open, it was a fresh install of Brave, no modifications whatsoever.
