See related epic #532.
See #469 to find out what extra stuff we need.
See #573 to show publishers chapter page counts.
See #544 for Apress discussion.
See #591 for Pragmatic discussion.

Context

I have Google search lists for top publishers, and some recommendation from friends.

We're rapidly approaching first contact (emails) with publishers, and need to flesh who we want to contact, how we want to manage that, and who contacts whom. Doing this research & decision-making seems suitable for an "analysis" card.

Added to this is:

  • The chapters are anemic (short on PDF page count) and need either beefing up, or consolidation
  • Check page counts by converting Markdown to PDF with for x in *.md ; do pandoc $x -o ${x%.md}.pdf ; done
Look at PDF page counts with pdfinfo X.pdf | grep '^Pages:'

Tasks

  • 1. Contact Martin Fowler for advice on publishing books.
  • 2. Contact Jez Humble & Dave Farley to see if the would like to connect books, and what advice they have on writing/publishing.
  • 3. Reach out to contacts and friends on recommendations on publishers to approach.
  • 4. Connect with Dan Woods for book publishing advice & contacts.
  • Write separate emails to each putative publisher.
  • Write O'Reilly
  • Write Manning
  • Write Apress
  • Write Pragmatic who is more open to open source
  • Add other publishers to the list

Addison-Wesley is not in this list: they focus on "serious" hardcover books rather than "practice" books.
