SerialOSCClient-sc

SerialOSC device (monome grid, arc) support for SuperCollider

Description

SerialOSCClient provides plug'n'play support for monome grids, arcs and other SerialOSC compliant devices.

At its core SerialOSCClient and its related classes are to SerialOSC devices what MIDIClient and its related classes in the SuperCollider standard library are to MIDI devices.

In addition, it's possible to instantiate SerialOSCClient for single-grid, single-enc or one-grid-and-one-enc use cases. SerialOSCClient instances constitute self-contained clients decoupled from the devices controlling it at any given time. SerialOSCClient callback functions and instance methods are provided for update of led state and responding to incoming events. Built-in routing capabilities are used to map devices to clients.

Examples

Test monome grid or arc

With a monome grid or arc attached to your computer, evaluate one of the following lines depending on what device you have attached:

SerialOSCGrid.testLeds;
SerialOSCEnc.testLeds;

Watch the SuperCollider Post Window. On evaluation SerialOSCClient will initialize if not already initialized. If initialized, attached devices will be posted to the Post Window.

SerialOSC Devices attached:
  x y z
Running test

A led demo should appear for the grid or arc attached. If the default Server is booted audio will be played. The SuperCollider server may be booted after the demo is launched, just evaluate:

s.boot;

Troubleshooting

If SerialOSCClient initialization cannot detect a suitable devices something like the following may be written to the Post Window:

No SerialOSC Devices are attached
Unable to run test, no default enc available

If this is the case, make sure the serialoscd server is started and that it correctly detected your device. It's possible to troubleshoot serialosc protocol messages to and from SerialOSCClient-sc and the serialoscd daemon by evaluating:

SerialOSC.trace;

After enabling trace, reinitialize SerialOSCClient and pay attention to messages written to the Post Window:

SerialOSCClient.init

Try to figure out what's going on by comparing the messages in the Post Window with the monome serialosc protocol documentation.

Basic Examples

Initialize SerialOSCClient.

SerialOSCClient.init;

Set led state of a grid:

SerialOSCGrid.ledSet(0, 0, 1); // set the top-leftmost led of default grid (first one attached) to lit
SerialOSCGrid.ledSet(0, 0, 0); // set the top-leftmost led of default grid (first one attached) to unlit

Listen to button events from a grid:

// a press or release of any button on any attached grid posts event state information to Post Window
GridKeydef(\test, { |x, y, state| (if (state == 1, "key down", "key up") + "at (%,%)".format(x, y)).postln });

GridKeydef(\test).free; // or CmdPeriod frees responder

Let a specific grid button toggle its led:

Client Example

Self-contained clients are created by instantiating SerialOSCClient. This is recommended for single-grid, single-enc or one-grid-and-one-enc use.

SerialOSCClient.postRoutings; // the client will automatically be routed to a grid connected to the computer

Requirements

This code was developed and has been tested in SuperCollider 3.8.0.

Installation

Copy the SerialOSCClient-sc folder to the user-specific or system-wide extension directory. Recompile the SuperCollider class library.

The user-specific extension directory may be retrieved by evaluating Platform.userExtensionDir in SuperCollider, the system-wide by evaluating Platform.systemExtensionDir.
