This is mainly code being pushed around; the main changes are:

  1. Move openssl / cyrptography backend specific calls into a backend object so the abstraction is better;
  2. Stop abusing the global constant HAS_CURRENT_CRYPTOGRAPHY as "use cryptography backend"; more precisely, stop using global constants (except in the _compatibility module) for mutable data.

@resmo do you prefer to review this in three PRs (I'll rebase the follow-up PRs once a PR is merged, so the follow-up PRs will get shorter), or do you prefer to review the final PR which contains all refactoring (#187)? :)
