[PR #1882/3333b658 backport][stable-6] allow s3_object put to specify metadata again This is a backport of PR #1882 as merged into main (3333b65). fix erroneous change to meaning fixes #1881 optional extra refactorings as separate commits (happy to drop these if unwanted) Reviewed-by: Mark Chappell
