Avoids a couple of server-side rendering errors when the overlay's backdrop is being created.

@crisbeto passes Google presubmit, but Travis looks to have some failures related to this PR

Avoids a couple of server-side rendering errors when the overlay's backdrop is being created.

Rebased and sorted out the test failure.
