Geohash.GeoRaptor: .NET Geohash Compression Tool

Note: This is a port of ashwin711/georaptor to C#/.NET.

Introduction

Geohash.GeoRaptor is a geohash compression library for efficiently reducing the size of large geohash collections. If you are wondering what geohashes are all about, I can recommend checking out this website by Movable Type which explains geohashing in simple terms while at the same time providing a highly visual technical demo.

Package Link Description
Geohash.GeoRaptor image Use this package to install GeoRaptor as a library in your C#/.NET project.
Geohash.GeoRaptor.CLI image Use this package to install GeoRaptor as a dotnet command line tool (see CLI quickstart below). You can install this tool using the command dotnet tool install --global Geohash.GeoRaptor.CLI.

API Quickstart

var geohashes = new HashSet<string>
{
    "w21zf9", "w21zfc", "w21zg1",
    "w21zg3", "w21zg9", "w21zgc2",
    "w21zu1", "w21zu3", "w21zu9",
    "w21zuc", "w21zv1", "w21zv3",
    "w21zv9", "w21zvc", "w21zy1",
    "w21zy3", "w21zy9", "w21zyc",
    "w21xy8", "w21xyb", "w21xz0"
};

var result = GeoRaptor.Compress(geohashes, 4, 5);

// Outputs "w21zf, w21zg, w21zu, w21zv, w21zy, w21xy, w21xz"
Console.WriteLine(string.Join(", ", result.ToArray()));

Command line quickstart

First install the dotnet tool version of GeoRaptor:

dotnet tool install --global Geohash.GeoRaptor.CLI

Then execute the tool from the command line using the georaptor command:

georaptor --lowest-precision 3 --highest-precision 4 -f some_input_file.txt

You can also pipe data to the tool:

georaptor --lowest-precision 3 --highest-precision 4 < some_input_file.txt

The compressed output is simply printed to stdout.

Here is a complete list of available command line options:

  -f, --input-file Path to a text file with geohashes (one geohash per line)

  -l, --lowest-precision     Required. Lowest precision

  -h, --highest-precision    Required. Highest precision

  -g, --output-geometry Enable this to add WKB geometries to the output

  --help                     Display this help screen.

  --version                  Display version information.
