Further to #1265, there is a need for broader guidance on authentication.

Why

This would provide a broader context for more specific related patterns such as #1265.

Further detail

The backlog item for Identifying users addresses some of these points.

This card could do with some further fleshing out.

@hannalaakso thanks for creating this issue. Might also be worth mentioning the existing Passwords pattern and the related backlog issue as that contains some relevant detail.

We could also possibly create a separate backlog issue for an "authenticator app" pattern, as quite a few services are using this?

There's a pattern in the Home Office Design System called 'Help users to access a service' that feels very closely aligned with this one.
