Fonts version 4.005 (OTF, TTF, WOFF, WOFF2, Variable)

Technical update – the CFF2 variable fonts (.otf) are now hinted.

⚠️ CAUTION:
Windows 10 and 11 currently have a major bug handling CFF2 variable fonts that could result in text corruption; we recommend using the TTF files on Windows machines until Microsoft addresses this. Microsoft is aware of the issue.

Minor fixes:

• solve contextual kerning for the geminated l (#109)
• fix hmtx issue in TTF VFs (#110)
• fix substitution for io + combining mark (#90)

Major changes

• Add optical sizes (#57)
  Source Serif now has six weights across five optical sizes, which increases the number of styles from 12 to 60. The variable fonts represent this change through the addition of an opsz axis.

• Shift text master in design space
  Source Serif’s interpolation setup was conceived in a time before Variable Fonts existed, which means that axis coordinates of masters did not necessarily need to coincide with instance locations. This led to a setup where the Regular style was defined to be slightly off the location of an intermediate master – simply because a heavier Regular looked better. In VF context, this approach was a little problematic, because default masters are presented in the list of available instances.
  In this release, the intermediate master (SourceSerif_1.ufo) was replaced by the Regular instance, and re-established as a new master. Effectively, the intermediate master was shifted while increasing its weight. Ripple effects across the interpolation space (changes of point coordinates, advance widths, kerning values) are small, but they do exist.

• Change family name (announced in #77)
  Adding optical sizes required re-assessment of spacing, proportions, and kerning decisions in all masters. Additionally, an intermediate master was shifted to clean up the VF design space. While care was taken to keep the existing styles largely equivalent to previous releases, reflow of existing documents is likely.
  The “Pro” label originally was attached to OpenType fonts to indicate their extended language coverage. With Source Serif’s character support far exceeding former “Pro” standards, this label does not have much meaning anymore.

For these reasons, the decision was made to change the family name from Source Serif Pro to Source Serif 4.

Fixes the STAT table of the variable fonts.

Fonts version 3.000 (OTF, TTF, WOFF, WOFF2, Variable)

Changes to Italic styles:

• extend Latin character set from AL-3 to AL-4
• add Cyrillic (covering AC-2)
• add Greek (covering AG-1)

Changes to Roman styles:

• minor updates to spacing of modifer glyphs
• updates to some Cyrillic characters as suggested by external advisors
• minor updates to Cyrillic kerning
• updates to some Greek characters as suggested by external advisors

Global changes:

• overhaul ccmp feature to decompose accented glyphs when followed by combining
  mark, thus allowing double-stacking of accents (addresses #41, #42)
• add ccmp solution for Ukrainian її clash, also for Latin ïï (addresses #48)
• add Bulgarian Cyrillic alternates both via locl and ss01 feature (addresses #20)
• add Serbian/Macedonian Cyrillic alternates both via locl and ss02 feature

Roman and Italic styles now support the same global character set,
in both static and variable versions.

First release in variable format.

⚠️ The .otf font CANNOT be installed on Windows or macOS systems because the OSes do not currently support the OpenType-CFF2 format. You can either try using the .ttf font, or install the latest non-variable fonts.

Fonts version 2.000 (OTF, TTF, WOFF, WOFF2, EOT)

The following changes were made:

• Increase character set to Adobe Latin 4.
• Add Greek (AG-1) & Cyrillic (AC-2) writing systems.
• Add Small Caps for all of the above.
• Add superiors for Latin capitals.

Fonts version 1.017 (OTF, TTF, WOFF, EOT)

The following changes were made:

• Add ExtraLight, Light and Black weights
• Semibold and Bold were made heavier
• Lcommaaccent and lcommaaccent were added (missing in first release).

Fonts version 1.014 (OTF, TTF, WOFF, EOT, SVG)
