I've always heard "coalescing" for this operation. But maybe "culling" is a common term in the database domain?

Sure - it's a future feature, we can rename it. That's just what I called it offhand.

Yep, just thinking that in an explainer, it'd be good to explain things in a way accessible to the wider audience, and at least my guess is that "coalescing" is a more well-understood term than "culling".
