I added this feature and generate widths for a few fonts.

Could you explain for what practices this is useful?

We use this in for example PyOrb to determine the width of excel columns. We can also use it later for when we generate word tables. Unfortunately the autowidth functionality of the word and excel modules doesn't work, so we have to do it ourselves
