Your mail server does not accept the authentication data.

I've verified that the password is correct. I also have another client Randy

After looking at the CPanel log files, it appears that it's an issue as to how the password is being sent to be authenticated as I've restarted the authentication service on the server, and am able to login to the other webmail apps such as Horde without difficulty. |
I've installed nginx on the server, but the problem still persists. If you feel that this is a server issue, can you please provide some direction as to where to look? I REALLY need to get this working. Please help me. |
nginx is not a mail server :) |
Thank you for your reply. I can understand that it appears to be a server issue. However, My I really love Rainloop and would like to stick with it. My clients love Randy

If it's an authentication problem with the Courier-IMAP, then why does using Roundcube, Squirrel Mail, and Horde all work fine? |
Try to enable STARTTLS in the domain settings. |
I tried using TLS in the settings, it didn't like it but SSL settings Randy

login in the admin panel, in Default Domain write darrenjacklin.com wait a second until it saves. Try to login in RainLoop with darren (without @darrenjacklin.com) as username and your password. |
unfortunately, that didn't work. If you like I can provide you a Randy

Is this issue still relevant? |
I removed nginx from the server, and installed an earlier version of Randy From: RainLoop Team [email protected] Is this issue still relevant? ‹ |
I think i might also be having this issue. @rdueck what version worked for you? FYI i have this problem with 1.6.2 and 1.6.9. I don't have access to the mail server right now but I'll talk to the admin asap and have him watch the logs. |
Why was the ticket closed? Has this been fixed in a new version? |
Sorry. Authentication error occurs for different reasons. |
I also have this issue. I can authenticate fine against my mail server (IMAP and SMTP) in mail.app on the desktop, for example, but the same credentials in RainLoop always return the "Authentication failed" error. I've installed it seemingly fine, but have never been able to actually log in as a user. I don't see anything inside data/data*/default/logs either. |
./data/xxxx/application.ini [logs]

I checked my Now I get logs; I've anonymised my log and attached it here, in the hopes it might provide some clues as to why we can't authenticate. My IP replaced with

As you can see your server did not accept the account's access credentials.
|
Yeah, I see this. The problem I have is that I'm using credentials which do work elsewhere. In other clients, I use just the username (in my case, that is |
Ok, you need to enable "Use short login" setting in your domain configuration. |
Wow, it works! 💃 I was quite sure I'd tried that option, although I wasn't entirely sure what it meant. Thanks so much for your help. Can the rest of you in this thread give this setting a try? |
I already had "Use short login" enabled Here are the logs when i try to login with "[email protected]":
When i click the "test" button for my domain settings it is successful. When i try to use "wiggins" as a username instead of "[email protected]" i get this:
Which leads me to believe i just don't understand the "Use short login" |
It means that RainLoop can't find "hyperionworks.com" domain.
To do that you need to set "Default Domian" setting in Admin panel / Login. |
I had trouble authenticating the first time I installed RainLoop and what works for me is to enter Then, in the Login section, enter This way, I can login with just |
In your case you shoud use "hyperionworks.com" as name for this domain. |
@MEGADR01D, i tried your suggestion but i still get "domain not allowed" The mailservers hostname is mail.hyperionworks.com. I tried to change it to hyperionworks.com in case that fixed it, but no luck. Any other ideas? I tried to login while watching the logs and got this:
|
The issue for me were the black-list and white-list plugins. When enabled, I received the "authentication error" message. When disabled, everything worked fine. |
@MEGADR01D , thank you so much for posting your fix, it worked for me. |
I had the same issue of Authentication Error but it is resolved now. My issue was that I enabled the Whitelist and Blacklist plugin without adding anything to the whitelist so all my logins were blocked. This might save someone some time. |
@MEGADR01D Solution worked for me ! |
To solve this, you must re-enable Basic Authentication for Outlook in your Google Account Settings. This can be done via the “Allow less secure apps” page where you set it to “Enable”. |
@gigantium Your solution is specific to Gmail, but I faced the same error with every mail server. |
@MEGADR01D Solution worked for me too, thanks ! |
This worked for me.. |
Hi! Since last update, smtp is failing authentication i even set up smtp server in debug mode. RainLoop is not sending credentials Here is the pertinent part from RainLoop logfile:
I tried short login (even tho it doesn't make sense), without it, the default domain is the domain.tld being used.. I don't understand! |
For me, it only worked without |
On my side it's also not working.

Just an FYI, I also had issues logging in. When I set up a domain, I used capital letters in the domain name and had troubles logging in. When I eliminated the capital letters, it worked fine. A simple note that the domain name is case sensitive would have quickly alleviated my problem. |
I was getting this authentication problem in an complete fresh install just today, with ssl credentials working in other clients and with successful testing within Rainloop. Hope this will help to other users. My problem was exactly what @starlyth commented a few months ago: @starlyth said:
Just to point that with these two plugins enabled, once you've added to the whitelist plugin the domain(s) you want to log in, it works fine. PS: Thaks to the author of Rainloop for this great webmail client! :-) |
Hi, Just to let you know I changed in the conf the login type from 'login' to plain' and it works now :) |
For me these worked:

I turned on the option "registration" in my config and put the link on the login page. How to create a new page Register using the built-in capabilities of RainLoop? |
Hi ! (sorry for my bad english !) I'm using RainLoop with Owncloud. I can't login user interface (admin panel works). I can't find applications.ini in folder plugin for active log activity. |
Hi, login to rainloop works with the password of my first email account !! ;) |
This worked for me, I let mail.mydomain.com unmodify and works fine, now I can access to my mail with and without typing the domain mail. Thx. Regards. |
This work for me! you saved my day. |
De - Activating Short Login, Worked For Me. |
Same "Authentication failed" Error. I have freshly installed Cyberpanel to my server and using rainloop in it. When I executed "journalctl -f | grep dovecot" I got following results. auth-worker(2701): Error: sql([email protected],127.0.0.1,): Invalid password in passdb: crypt() failed: Invalid argument How can I fix it? |
@isssfa same here!!! |
@ahmedbenaw I finally fingered that thing out long back. I updated "Dovecot" to the latest version and it happens to work fine. Or you can install Ubuntu latest version then install again it'll work. It is problem with type of encryption. |
When trying to login to Rainloop, I receive the message 'Authentication Failed' As a result, I tried re-installing Rainloop, but got the same problem. I confirmed that the password is correct. I discovered the 'log' files and the result is below...
