The ADM decomposition

The basic knowledge of the ADM decomposition that you require is:

  1. What is the 3+1D ADM decomposition of the Einstein Equations?
  2. How do I project 4D metric quantities into 3D spatial slices?
  3. What is the physical interpretation of quantities like the lapse, shift, and intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures?
  4. What equations of motion or constraints do these quantities obey?

I include here for reference the slides I use when I cover the 3+1 ADM decomposition and the points listed above for those following this course in person. If all the material in these looks familiar and makes sense, then you are good to go to the next stage. If it looks completely alien you probably need to go back to the Useful Resources and read again about these topics.

You can test your understanding of these topics by doing these NR questions for which the solutions are here.
