In response to the plagiarism incident we experienced a few months ago, I am changing the license from MIT to a modified CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license. This has the following effects:
This ensures that is anyone were to steal our content, they would be required to provide attribution. Additionally, this would prevent them from profiting off the project due to the NonCommercial clause. With the incident we had, I was primarily frustrated that someone would attempt to make money off of contributions to Hacking the Cloud. I'm hoping that this license can help prevent that in the future.
Additionally, It is worth noting that this license has been modified to provide an exception to myself (or whoever owns the Hacking the Cloud git repo) to the NonCommercial clause. I did this with the intention of having the option for Hacking the Cloud to have sponsorships in the future. To be clear, Hacking the Cloud will always be a free and open source project for anyone. However, the opportunities for sponsorships may help the project grow and provide different types of content (for example, video). This exceptions makes it possible for me to accept/raise funds for this purpose.
This will also help cover the costs associated with the project (Domain fee, Material for MKDocs license, etc.) as well as fund future ones.
