How are block producers to be scheduled? Via rounds? What happens if all blocks are missed for more than one round? Does the round simply repeat?

Of course all of these questions have been answered before in BTS and Steem, but since none of the EOS producer scheduling code is written yet, I figure we should take a moment to make sure we know exactly how we want this to work, factoring in all the lessons from past experience.

EOS block producers should be scheduled same way as latest STEEM producers.

One thing I would like to consider is reducing the 128 bit math for virtual time and position with 64 bit math.

21 producers, top 20 by approval voting every round, last 1 selected based on virtual schedule.

A producer who misses a block after not producing for 24 hours is automatically unscheduled by setting their signing key to null. Skip any producers whose signing key is null.

Only other difference from STEEM is that only a single layer of proxy voting will be supported.

These fields are used for the Producer scheduling algorithm which uses
* virtual time to ensure that all witnesses are given proportional time
* for producing blocks.
*
* @ref votes is used to determine speed. The @ref virtual_scheduled_time is
* the expected time at which this witness should complete a virtual lap which
* is defined as the position equal to 1000 times MAXVOTES.
*
* virtual_scheduled_time = virtual_last_update + (1000MAXVOTES - virtual_position) / votes
*
* Every time the number of votes changes the virtual_position and virtual_scheduled_time must
* update. There is a global current virtual_scheduled_time which gets updated every time
* a witness is scheduled. To update the virtual_position the following math is performed.
*
* virtual_position = virtual_position + votes * (virtual_current_time - virtual_last_update)
* virtual_last_update = virtual_current_time
* votes += delta_vote
* virtual_scheduled_time = virtual_last_update + (1000
MAXVOTES - virtual_position) / votes
*

Begin defining objects and contract handlers for tracking producer votes
and the "race" to select runner-up producers
nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 3, 2017
Initial work on locking EOS, beginning unlock, and claiming unlocked
EOS.

TODO: Actually split the system contract, and define names for the
different parts so we can check that the required notifications are made.
Also, figure out how to write notify handlers for the native contracts,
to handle these critical balance updates in the staking/unstaking of
EOS. See the #warning TODO comments in the commit for context.
nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 13, 2017
Add producer schedule changes to block_header, so light clients can see
the round changes by just watching block headers.

Implement changing the producer schedule at round changes, first checking
that the schedule changes in the block_header are correct, then applying
them.

TODO: Actually calculating the new round (right not it never changes)
nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 15, 2017
Calculating the new producer schedule based on votes is now implemented;
however, the voting itself is not. :D But the code builds, and the tests
pass. It's good progress, it's been a good day.

Note that "the tests pass" means little at this stage, since I haven't
written any new tests to exercise the new code. In other words, NEEDS
TESTING!

Still TODO here:

  • When an account approves/unapproves a producer, add/remove that account's stake to that producer's votes
  • When an account gains or loses stake, add/remove the gained/lost stake to all producers that account votes for
  • Calculate the producer round changes in generate_block and add to block header
  • Proxied voting...?

If I'm not mistaken, we can ignore the CreateAccount initial deposit of stake, as a newly created account cannot be voting for anything yet, so we need do no updates until the new account creates a transaction voting for something, at which point it will be handled as usual. The only times the stake will change are TransferToLocked and StartUnlockEos

It could be argued that a newly created producer should automatically have its creator's stake voting for it; however, I don't think this is necessary, and I'm not confident it's even desirable, so for now I will leave newly created producers as having no votes.

nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 15, 2017
An account can now approve a producer, and that producer's votes are
increased appropriately. The account can remove approval, and the votes
are decreased appropriately. Additionally, the producer is added/removed
to the account's approved producers list as desired.

TODO: A producer with more votes than the rest is still never rotated in
nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 21, 2017
Progress:
- When an account adds/removes stake, we now update votes for its
approved producers
- Name map<AccountName, AccountName> as RoundChanges, and define
operator- such that RoundChanges = ProducerRound - ProducerRound

Test the vote updates, making sure that producer votes are updated when
an account adds stake

TODO: Calculate the producer round changes in generate_block and add to
block header
nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 21, 2017
Now we calculate the round changes and store them in generate_block.
nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 23, 2017
Define types, objects, and indexes necessary for proxied voting on
producers. Also, perform some necessary refactoring, as the old code
assumed the only way votes could be cast would be direct, not by proxy.
nathanielhourt added a commit that referenced this issue Jun 23, 2017
I think I've implemented all of it, but it's not tested yet so I'm
leaving the issue open for now.

* add a test that reduces the size of the producer set to validate that it does not create protocol level issues

* promote rc2 to release

* add missing release to deb packages

* remove x86_64 arch dep specification on AMI2 build script

I can't find any reason we need to explcitly request the x86_64 versions of packages for AMI2. Removing this apparently extraneous specification makes the build script "just work" on new ARM8 instances

* Use 64-bit float printing of 128-bit floats on non x86_64

For platforms other then x86_64, have the 128-bit float console print API (printqf()) convert to a 64-bit float before printing. While this loses precision it’s enough to get the unit tests for printqf() working on ARM8, which actually was the only unit_test unit test that failed on that platform.

* prebump to 1.6.0 and add develop suffix

* Do not broadcast block if peer lib is larger than block number

* Provide more efficient sha256_less

* Pass id and packed_transaction by const& since never moved

* Remove copy assignment operator. Remove used std::move.

* Minimize packed_transaction copies. Store packed_transaction_ptr in transaction_metadata.

* Cache chain_plugin lookup

* Update tester for transaction_metadata packed_transaction_ptr

* Remove packed_tansaction to net_message copy

* Remove unused constructor

* Explicitly disable copy/move construction

* Remove inflight update of node_transaction_state as it is not needed

* Remove connections for unused signals that only logged

* Fix sync check for lib

* add a test that verifies proposing an empty producer schedule does not break things

* Allow disablement of net_plugin's listen socket

Disable net_plugin's listen socket when p2p-listen-endpoint is empty. This is useful for security and for an easier way of running multiple nodeos without it conflicting when you don't actually need to service incoming connections.

* More descriptive memo to distinguish from other transfers

* Revert "Fix sync check for lib"

This reverts commit 52a6f19.

* Update the bios-boot-tutorial.py script and readme.md:
1. args.contracts_dir doesn't end in a forward slash, therefor when it is concatenated with a subpath, the subpath has to start with a forward slash; this pattern is present in other similar variables as well
2. system contract has to be initialized before it can be used (e.g. creating staked acconts)
3. commands list updated to include the new addition stepInitSystemContract
4. readme.md updated as well to reflect the current status of the script and requirements
