Benchmark results

No metrics with a significant change found.

Detailed results

All benchmarks are run on txs on the Benchmarking contract on the repository. Each tx consists of a batch call to create_note and increment_balance, which guarantees that each tx has a private call, a nested private call, a public call, and a nested public call, as well as an emitted private note, an unencrypted log, and public storage read and write.

This benchmark source data is available in JSON format on S3 here.

Values are compared against data from master at commit 69c1d663 and shown if the difference exceeds 1%.

This PR was extracted from #2592 and has the highest likelihood of causing merge conflicts.

Rationale

Previously we were calling pedersen or pedersen_with_separator then taking the x coordinate, in order to hash. This PR extracts that behaviour into one function in hash.nr called pedersen_hash and all other functions call this method from now on. Note: pedersen was implicitly passing the hash_index as 0.

This was done for three reasons:

  • Less duplication of the same commit(input)[0] pattern.
  • When feat: refactor pedersen hash standard #2592 lands, we want to have a followup PR which modifes the pedersen_hash and having it one place makes this easier
  • I removed the domain separator from feat: refactor pedersen hash standard #2592 but once we add it back, then we would need to pass in a string to all calls to pedersen hash which ideally would only be done in one place. We would ultimately have a method that looks like:
use dep::std::hash::pedersen_hash as generic_noir_pedersen_hash;

// Aztec variant of pedersen hash with the "AZTEC" string as a domain separator
fn pedersen_hash<N>(inputs : [Field;N], hash_index : u32) -> Field {
   generic_noir_pedersen_hash("AZTEC", inputs, hash_index)
}

this looks like a breaking change? If so could you add ! in the PR after chore?

I think it shouldn't change any functionality and doesn't modify any function that was exposed before!
