Historically, Ireland was subdivided into four provinces: Ulster, Connaught, Munster, and Leinster. Today, these provinces serve historical and cultural purposes, but not administrative purposes. The first level administrative subdivision of Ireland are its 26 counties. Further historical subdivisions also included 2,445 civil and church parishes. Additionally, while there are 3440 District Electoral Divisions and Wards in Ireland, these are not officially recognized as administrative divisions within the country. Currently, there exist 166 local electoral areas. These are used for the election of local administrators and politicians, and for statistical purposes. They are also considered administrative divisions by Eurostat NUTS are considered a functional second administrative division.
