The examples shown for the aggregations is incorrect.
In Your first chart:

day_totals = days.aggregate([
    ('so2', agate.Sum(), 'so2'),
    ('co2', agate.Sum(), 'co2'),
    ('nox', agate.Sum(), 'nox')
])

and in Rendering multiple series:

state_totals = states.aggregate([
    ('so2', agate.Sum(), 'so2'),
    ('co2', agate.Sum(), 'co2'),
    ('noX', agate.Sum(), 'noX')
])

Indeed in both cases, Sum expects the column name:

    ('so2', agate.Sum('so2')),
    ('co2', agate.Sum('co2')),
    ('noX', agate.Sum('noX'))
