Recording using MIDI keyboard

I have two MIDI device that both assign C1 to MIDI note 36. When I play C1 on either of these the Performer monitor page shows MIDI note 36 received. BUT when I try to record the same key press Performer shows C -2 on the step page. That's three octave below my intended pitch. I have looked and looked for some setting that would cause this but can't fine one. It happens on a new blank project as well. What did I miss?
