Preliminary proposal to create a W3C Note on WebID Definitions

W3C Note: WebID Definitions

Purpose: To Provide Final, Stable Definitions for WebID and Related Terms

Abstract:

This document presents the finalized, stable definitions of key terminology associated with WebID technology. These definitions aim to ensure consistency and clarity across the W3C community and support the broader adoption and implementation of WebIDs.

Background:

The initial drafts and discussions around WebID technology introduced preliminary definitions for essential terms such as WebID, WebID Profile Document, and Agent. The development of a formal W3C Note to solidify these definitions marks a critical step towards a unified understanding and application of these terms within the community.

Definitions:

  • WebID: An identifier in the form of an HTTP URI that unambiguously names an Agent and, when dereferenced, always leads to a WebID Profile Document which itself indicates that it describes the Agent named by the WebID.

  • WebID Profile Document: An RDF (Resource Definition Framework) document that describes an Agent.

  • Agent: An entity that performs or can perform an action, e.g., a person, an organization, a device.

Next Steps:

  1. Feedback Integration: Initial feedback from the W3C community has been integrated into the definitions provided in this note.

  2. Concern Resolution: Throughout the drafting process, concerns and suggestions for improvement were openly discussed and resolved to refine the definitions further.

  3. Definition Finalization: The consensus achieved through community engagement and discussion has resulted in the final definitions presented in this document.

Expected Outcome:

The establishment of these definitions serves multiple key purposes within the ecosystem of WebID technology:

  • Enhanced Clarity and Uniformity: Establishing clear, agreed-upon definitions ensures that all participants in the W3C community have a common understanding of these fundamental concepts.

  • Facilitated Interoperability: With standardized terminology, different implementations of WebID technology can achieve greater compatibility and interoperability.

  • Promotion of Adoption: Clearly defined and universally understood terms are crucial for encouraging the broader acceptance and use of WebID technology across various domains.

Conclusion:

With the publication of this W3C Note, the community now has access to authoritative definitions of crucial WebID terminology. These definitions are intended to be used as a reference point for current and future work related to WebID technology, promoting a consistent and cohesive approach to its development and application.
