2024: Year in Review

As the year wraps up, we're thrilled to share the achievements of the project in 2024. Thanks to our contributors, we've made significant progress toward creating a comprehensive and user-friendly holidays framework! Here's what we accomplished:

Releases and Contributors

• 23 releases: Streamlined our delivery throughout the year with a consistent schedule of two releases per month.
• Documented the release process for easier management in the future.
• 33 unique contributors: Up from 22 last year -- thank you for your support and efforts!

Localization and Regional Support

• Multiple localization improvements, including en_US localization for all supported countries.
• Added financial markets localization support for better regional holidays management.
• Introduced subdivisions aliases for easier access.
• Improved 100+ existing holiday entities for greater accuracy.

Tooling and Automation

• Migrated to Ruff for linting, replacing Black and Flake8.
• Enhanced internal tooling, including Makefile and pre-commit upgrades.
• Added package build tests and documentation build tests to CI/CD pipelines.
• Transitioned to holidays.readthedocs.io for improved documentation hosting.

Code Quality and Performance

• Refactored HolidayBase::__getattr__ to speed up _add_holiday_* methods.
• Replaced datetime.timedelta with a custom function for efficiency.
• Synchronized entity dynamic imports.
• Introduced start/end year support for entities.
• Enforced 100% test coverage.

Modernization and Maintenance

• Renamed and unified repository branches.
• Migrated to Codecov.io for test coverage tracking.
• Added a CodeQL workflow for enhanced security.
• Implemented CycloneDX SBOM generation for dependency management.
• Dropped support for Python 3.8 and added support for Python 3.13.

Community and Collaboration

• Added an AUTHORS file to acknowledge all contributors.
• Simplified collaboration with:
  • New GitHub issue templates.
  • Better PR template.
• Welcomed @PPsyrius as a new core team member 🎉

This year marked the beginning of our journey toward holidays v1 and the development of the Open World Holidays Framework. Stay tuned for even more improvements and expansions in 2025!
