Logo image #80

A logo would be nice. Should there be a C (for coreutils) in the middle of the ring with the instruments around that? |
I wonder if C could be confused with the language. What about CU ? A logo would be very cool. |
If that we're the case, though, wouldn't Rust's logo be confused with the language R? :) |
No because R is not famous as C. Jk, you have a good point. |
Perhaps a U for utils. I feel like CU would be too much. |
U might work. |
Do you really want some char there? |
I would prefer that there was a character there, yes. |
+1 for a character |
Alright, so |
Also interesting to here @Seldaek opinion |
|
I like |
C or U sounds ok, not sure if the cog thing will work out very pretty but I suppose an imperfect logo is better than no logo :) |
I kind of like it !!! 👍 I wonder if we can play with the color of the U and the cog. I feel the colors don't match. |
It's a good start. :) The only things I don't like about it are the color of the U, the inconsistency between the inner… things (I don't know what they're called, but the things with the holes in them), and the overlap of the U with the cog (I'd prefer if it was more like Rust's logo where the letter blends in with the cog). Oh, and were we planning on putting instruments in or around the cog? |
color of u was changed from black to it to not be same as cog... not sure what color for it will be better |
If the bottom of the U was raised a little bit more so that it was just barely touching the things with the holes (seriously, what are those called?), I think it would work fine in black (like Rust's logo). I think this would work especially so if the inconsistency was fixed. |
@Arcterus you mean with smaller |
@Heather yes. |
I was thinking we could use some color ? I picked blue because is one of my favorites. I have the svg and probably this should migrate into a branch so that more than 1 can hack the svg. |
@alan-andrade looks good :) I think it's better than my variants... May you share this cog, I've got some ideas how can I use it for some other projects maybe. |
If a designer looked at how I got rid of the R, he would probably kill us... haha. |
@Heather I just emailed you the svg. Let me know if it worked. |
@alan-andrade got it, thank you btw I like orange one |
Those look really good. My favorites are the orange and the blue (although orange probably fits more with "rust"). |
I prefer the lack of shadow on the blue one. It looks cleaner. |
@alan-andrade I like it but I think other will like simple one with just |
I like that one a lot. 👍 |
Hey guys, what's the next step for the logo ? |
we wait for @Seldaek |
Is everyone cool with the last proposal from @alan-andrade? Looks fine to me, and if you're all happy with it I can update the github organization. |
@Seldaek I guess |
@Seldaek I believe so. |
I had an email in my inbox asking if it's ok to reuse the Rust logo this way, though I can't find it right now. The short answer is that I think it's fine to modify and reuse the Rust logo. The long answer is that I still have not been able to get official word on how the Rust logo may be used, but I am advocating that it be permissively licensed. It's very unlikely that there will be any situation in which somebody at Mozilla will object to people using the Rust logo in good faith. The issue tracking the status of the Rust logo is rust-lang/rust#11562 |
@brson thanks for answering (even though you had to take the scenic route:) - we'll run with it for now then, let's hope it lasts! |
Alright it's up, might take a while for github's cache to update it though. |
The U is not perfectly x/y centered on that last image. For the y-height, even if you get it vertically centered you might want to (subjectively) lower it a bit due to the perceived style of the shape (more angular on the bottom) – pragmatic design is how fonts are made too usually (e.g., you will rarely see an uppercase H with a horizontal bar that's as thick as the vertical ones, because it looks bad on the eye). EDIT: maybe decrease the height of the letter outline – I dunno if it's compressed already of if it's the original shape but it does not look too natural. |
What about an logo image?
What do you want to see as logo image?
What about the ring from Rust logo and some instruments in the middle?
