PRELIMINARY PAGE NUMBERS

I recently submitted my dissertation to the Grad School and they email me with some revisions to make. One of them was to change preliminary page numbers to "lower case roman numerals" because they appear as "Upper case roman numerals". I tried to change it using the command \pagenumbering{roman} in the preamble but it doesn't work. Any idea on how to fix it? Thanks.
