Would it be possible to have sync independent of browser? I don't think getting major players to accept a protocol would be possible, but using extensions might work.
I would love to continue on tabs and bookmarks and history and everything when I move from my desktop to my phone, but on desktop I use Brave and on my phone Cromite. Passwords aren't a concern because I use a password manager instead of my browser.
Brave doesn't allow unofficial builds to use their official server, there's no fork of brave, and they don't allow changing the sync address in the client, so that's ruled out. There's Firefox's server and code, but it's, well, Firefox and I have no idea how their sync works.
Edit: Allegedly Firefox's sync (even selfhosted) works great and syncs everything. The problem would be getting it on Chromium through either modification to the core code or extensions. Brave has an "extensions" page that are hot-swappable browser components. Could this be used to load a sync module on desktop chromium browsers and integrated in mobile versions?
Has there been any effort for this? Any projects?
Edit2: There is Floccus but it needs a separate Android app. It also only syncs tabs and bookmarks, no history.
Also, there is xbrowsersync, which as the name suggests, only syncs bookmarks and like the former, needs an android app.
