Using a remote database

Hi,

The documentation for the STEAMPIPE_WORKSPACE_DATABASE environment variable suggests it would be possible to use a remote Postgres database, rather than an internal one.

Is this correct?

I've found that setting this env var to a connection string or a workspace name has no impact - a local database is always used.

It's true that the steampipe CLI is designed to connect to running Steampipe CLI instances with their embedded Postgres server.

But, I'll also note that we recently released native Postgres FDWs for Steampipe plugins - which may be of interest if you want to use your own Postgres server - https://steampipe.io/blog/2023-12-postgres-extensions

You can definitely use the Steampipe CLI to connect to a remote database though - for example, a Steampipe Postgres instance running at Turbot Pipes.
