I'm fairly sure the issue is with the large offset, and I'm also fairly sure it's a known problem. At least in some circles. I can't find any open issues though, so maybe it was never reported?

I think this will occur when using any read offset >= cd sector size.

I found an old drive that needs a read offset of 688 and this patch fixed it for me: http://pastebin.com/Zvj0JBEp

I don't know if cdparanoia is still even alive upstream. The mailing list seems pretty desolate, and there haven't been any svn checkins in a very long time.

This patch also fixes a bug that caused overreading to fail even on drives that can do it.

The above patch doesn't fix this for me (my drive offset is 667), I get errors like:

scsi_read error: sector=264427 length=1 retry=3
                 Sense key: 5 ASC: 21 ASCQ: 0
                 Transport error: Illegal SCSI request (rejected by target)
                 System error: Invalid argument

I guess I'll have to live with not being able to verify the rips.

FWIW, I'm seeing error's similar to adamreeve's even with the patches from mustbenice. I guess my drive is one of "Many drives are not capable of reading into this portion of the disc".
