I'm guessing that since intel conforms to standards it will be via DFU, and standard tools will work. Also probably at least has a checksum to make sure corrupted files don't brick the camera so it's probably safe to try?
Note from what I've learned from someone emailing me the new HP Sprout has the firmware from last year, but the drivers that come with it break the official intel SDK. So this simultaneously might be the only way to install the update on a sprout, and may possibly break the sprout software.
Just for the record, I have a PCAP file which (probably) contains a firmware update of the F200. For those interested, it's available here: http://floe.butterbrot.org/external/firmware_pcap/realsense.pcap
