Could you handle reddit URL's from https://pay.reddit.com with this app?

This is tricky because there were recent troubles with the app hitting reddit's SSL too often. will need to find out more.

One possibility is to parse the https url but not use SSL, but of course that is misleading to the user

Personally, I see no issue with a redirect to non-SSL if its clearly explained in a setting somewhere?

When do you see links to pay.reddit.com? Are they common?

Not really common. They show up if you use HTTPS Everywhere (by EFF) for Chrome or Firefox and send links from those to an Android phone (or get sent those links from another user who uses that plugin.)
