Scala 2.12 is now maintenance only: https://www.scala-lang.org/download/all.html

Some libraries we use, mainly akka-streams-kafka no longer compiles against 2.12, meaning we are blocked from updating them.

Clients would still be able to use kafka-topic-loader on all current versions that are compiled against 2.12, but going forward we would drop support for it.
