Is it possible to hide a layer as the default rendering?

We have a map with 2 markers/layers. We would like to default to showing only 1 layer when initially rendered, but have both layers available in the Layer Control box. This will allow us to easily click on a layer control to show those markers on the map. Is this possible? In simplest terms, is it possible to hide a layer when initially displayed?
