The build system attempts to rebuild only the single module but throws an error about the object not fitting within existing object structure

relocation R_X86_64_32S against `.bss' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC

This issue is not as widespread as initially thought.

It may have been a combination of a failed build, altered files and continuation creating dissociated files.
