Improve Duration::try_from_secs_f32/64 accuracy by directly processing exponent and mantissa #90247

Closes: #90225

The methods now implement direct processing of exponent and mantissa, which should result in the best possible conversion accuracy (modulo truncation, i.e. float value of 19.995 ns will be represented as 19 ns).

Out of curiosity: are the extra 47ns because 2.7 does not have an exact f32 representation? The example now looks a bit unfortunate.

Yes, the closest f32 to 2.7 is 2.700000047683715... I think it's worth to have a clear demonstration of floats being "lossy", especially 32 bit ones.

Note for the author and reviewers that this proposed code, generate worse machine code; not by much but not negliable either.

EDIT: Although the code is theoretically slightly worse, in practice it's way better due to the removal of libm calls. See #90247 (comment) for benchmarks.

Too bad we can't use f32::trunc/f64::trunc: Godbolt. Huh, the total cycles are higher than the hand-rolled trunc?

If I understand your link correctly, then the new version took less cycles to complete (1723 vs 3993). It's possible to improve performance by using u64 instead of u128 for the nanos part, but it degrades conversion accuracy a bit.

The benchmarks should reflect a significant speed increase in practice (though you may want to carefully pick an input which triggers the worst cases for either implementation).

Yeah, you're right I've just see that the number of instructions was worse and because there was more branches I assume the code will be worse, but because the "Total Cycles" is way better I expect better time.

I've done some benchmark with the 3 implementations (before with libm, new and new with reordered match arms).

As @nagisa predicted, we can see a clear speedup with the new implementation. @newpavlov I would suggest you to revert your last commit ("reorder match arms") as it seems that it is slightly worse in two benchmark than the version without.

Note that this change reflects the fact that negativity is now checked before anything else, meaning that -inf and -NaN are now a Negative error instead of a NonFinite error.

(the wording does imply that +inf should instead be an Overflow error instead of a NonFinite one, only leaving NaN to be a NonFinite error)

The error kinds are not exposed publicly and only used for generating error descriptions, so I think the order of checks is fairly unimportant. The main reason why I have changed the wording was to fix the ambiguity: the previous variant can be read as both "is not (finite, negative or overflows)" and "is (not finite), negative or overflows".

    Implement AnyOf queries (#2889)

    Implements a new Queryable called AnyOf, which will return an item as long as at least one of it's requested Queryables returns something. For example, a `Query<AnyOf<(&A, &B, &C)>>` will return items with type `(Option<&A>, Option<&B>, Option<&C>)`, and will guarantee that for every element at least one of the option s is Some. This is a shorthand for queries like `Query<(Option<&A>, Option<&B>, Option<&C>), Or<(With<A>, With<B>, With&C>)>>`.

    bevy_asset: Add AssetServerSettings watch_for_changes member (#3643)

    # Objective

    - `asset_server.watch_for_changes().unwrap()` only watches changes for assets loaded **_after_** that call.
    - Technically, the `hot_asset_reloading` example is racey as the watch on the asset path is set up in an async task scheduled from the asset `load()`, but the filesystem watcher is only constructed in a call that comes **_after_** the call to `load()`.

    ## Solution

    -  It feels safest to allow enabling watching the filesystem for changes on the asset server from the point of its construction. Therefore, adding such an option to `AssetServerSettings` seemed to be the correct solution.
    - Fix `hot_asset_reloading` by inserting the `AssetServerSettings` resource with `watch_for_changes: true` instead of calling `asset_server.watch_for_changes().unwrap()`.
    - Document the shortcomings of `.watch_for_changes()`

    - This enables Input to be cloned, allowing it to be manually updated with events.

    ## Solution

    Since this panic occurs in bevy_ecs, and StartupStage is part of
    bevy_app, we really only have access to the Debug string of the
    `stage_label` parameter.  This led me to the hacky solution of
    comparing the debug output of the label the user provides with the known
    variants of StartupStage.

    An alternative would be to do this error handling further up in
    bevy_app, where we can access StartupStage's typeid, but I don't think
    it is worth having a panic in 2 places (_ecs, and _app).

    I tested this and this is thankfully not the case. If you are linking to a private item you will get a warning no matter if you run `cargo doc` or `cargo doc --document-private-items`.

    ### Example

    I added `struct Test;` to `bevy_core/src/name.rs` and linked to it inside of a doc comment using ``[`Test`]``. After that I ran `cargo doc -p bevy_core --document-private-items` using `RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D warnings"` and got the following output (note the last sentence):

    Add the Inside version to the Collision enum (#2489)

    # Objective
    I think the 'collide' function inside the 'bevy/crates/bevy_sprite/src/collide_aabb.rs' file should return 'Some' if the two rectangles are fully overlapping or one is inside the other. This can happen on low-end machines when a lot of time passes between two frames because of a stutter, so a bullet for example gets inside its target. I can also think of situations where this is a valid use case even without stutters.

    ## Solution
    I added an 'Inside' version to the Collision enum declared in the file. And I use it, when the two rectangles are overlapping, but we can't say from which direction it happened. I gave a 'penetration depth' of minus Infinity to these cases, so that this variant only appears, when the two rectangles overlap from each side fully. I am not sure if this is the right thing to do.

    Some new bevy users are unfamiliar with quaternions and have trouble working with rotations in 2D.

    There has been an [issue](https://github.com/bitshifter/glam-rs/issues/226) raised with glam to add helpers to better support these users, however for now I feel could be better to provide examples of how to do this in Bevy as a starting point for new users.

    ## Solution

    I've added a 2d_rotation example which demonstrates 3 different rotation examples to try help get people started:

    - Rotating and translating a player ship based on keyboard input
    - An enemy ship type that rotates to face the player ship immediately
    - An enemy ship type that rotates to face the player at a fixed angular velocity

    I also have a standalone version of this example here https://github.com/bitshifter/bevy-2d-rotation-example but I think it would be more discoverable if it's included with Bevy.

    ## What was `TextGlyphs`?
    This is the real question of this Issue and PR. This is particulary interesting because not only is `TextGlyphs` not a type in bevy, but it _never was_. Indeed, this type never existed on main. Where did it come from?

    `TextGlyphs` was originally a tuple struct wrapping a `Vec<PositionedGlyph>`. It was first introduced back in commit https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pull/765/commits/ec390aec4ebe7192e3470dddf1e8af36f10453e6 in #765. At the time, position information was being stored on the text entities directly. However, after design review, [it was decided](https://github.com/bevyengine/bevy/pull/765#issuecomment-725047186) to instead store the glyphs in a `HashMap` owned by the `TextPipeline`. When this was done, the original type was not only removed, but abstracted behind a few layers of the `TextPipeline` API. Obviously, the original docstring wasn't updated accordingly.

    Later, as part of #1122, the incorrect docstring was swept up when copy/pasting `text_system` for `text2d`. (Although I don't blame @CleanCut for this; it took me like 3 hours to track all this down to find the original context.)

    - Do not compute and add an `Aabb` to `Mesh` entities without an `Aabb` if they have a `NoFrustumCulling` marker component
    - Do not apply frustum culling to entities with the `NoFrustumCulling` marker component

    I added the rust API guidelines (https://rust-lang.github.io/api-guidelines/about.html) to the `CONTRIBUTING.md` file.

    ## Note
    As noted in #3497 we should note any areas where we deliberately disagree as they arise. If we start adding these areas it might be a good idea to remove the mention of the `API guidelines` in the `CONTRIBUTING.md` file and move it to the `engine_style_guide.md`. That way we still have the connection between the `CONTRIBUTING.md` and the `API guidelines`, but we have more "space" to work with and can go into more detail about what we agree and disagree on.

    For now I would leave it this way, because it's one less click to get to the guidelines.

    Documentation: simplify NixOS dependencies (#3527)

    # Objective

    The description of NixOS dependencies is extremely long and spends entire paragraphs just for simple line changes.
    With this PR it should be much simpler.

    ## Solution

    - Linking Vulkan in `build.rs` is less effective than adding it in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, so I removed the former (related to #1992);
    - I put a simple comment explaining the line in the list of dependencies, instead of making entire paragraphs;
    - Clang is not in an absolute path in `.cargo/config_fast_builds` anymore, so that there is no need to specify it in `docs/linux_dependencies.md` (didn't test if this breaks other distros, though I doubt it. Also, maybe it could also be done on Darwin for consistency?);
    - Also added optional wayland dependencies.

    A few notes:
    - The x11 libraries will be linked only during the compilation phase. This means that if you use the `x11` feature without these libraries in the environment (for example because you forget to enter the nix shell before compiling), the program will still compile successfully but won't run. You'll have to `cargo clean` and recompile with the x11 libraries in the environment. I don't know if this is important enough to be added to the documentation, but it's not specified anywhere, though I don't think it's specific to NixOS;
    - The wayland dependencies need to be put in LD_LIBRARY_PATH only in certain conditions (IIRC, only if using the `dynamic` feature) and the text doesn't specify it. Because putting them there doesn't increase the number of dependencies (they are already in buildInputs) or alter the performance, I doubt anyone will care;
    - Should I comment out what isn't needed by default?
    - ~I removed `cargo` from buildInputs. Ignoring the fact that it should be in nativeBuildInputs, having it in `shell.nix` allows to use stable Rust in case it's not in the system environment, but maybe the user wanted to use the version that was already in the system environment and will be caught by surprise. In my opinion, if someone is looking at a Bevy's documentation on NixOS, that user will either have Rust already in the system environment (eg. via rustup) or is capable to add the toolchain they want on shell.nix by themselves. This isn't exactly the place to explain how this works.~ ~EDIT: I replaced `cargo` with Rust from the [Oxalica overlay](https://github.com/oxalica/rust-overlay) in order to have the latest nightly.~ EDIT: Removed `cargo` from dependencies. See comments for details.

    `clippy` has a lint for this: `doc_markdown`. This enables that lint in the CI script.

While this is a welcomed improvement, I will note that it did cause some test failures in a crate I support. The affected routine presents duration metrics as JSON, representing a Duration as a floating point value of seconds. The tests used a baseline set and compared against some handcrafted input, including deliberately setting the duration metrics with Duration::from_secs_f64. The result was a slightly different precision than the baseline floating point values as are parsed by f64::parse or serde_json::value::Number. It was an easy work around to be 100% accurate: just use Duration:new instead. So thank you for forcing better accuracy! But thought I'd mention this here in case it was of interest to anyone.

Fix `Duration::{try_,}from_secs_f{32,64}(-0.0)`

Make `Duration::{try_,}from_secs_f{32,64}(-0.0)` return `Duration::ZERO` (as they did before rust-lang#90247) instead of erroring/panicking.

I'll update this PR to remove the `#![feature(duration_checked_float)]` if rust-lang#102271 is merged before this PR.

In this stabilization PR, I have altered the name of the error type to `TryFromFloatSecsError`. In my opinion, the error type shares the name of the method (adjusted to accommodate both types of floats), which is consistent with other error types in `core`, `alloc` and `std` like `TryReserveError` and `TryFromIntError`.

## Experience Report

Code such as this is ready to be converted to a checked API to ensure it is panic free:

version 1.60 of the rust stdlib included a change to improve the accuracy
of calculations in `Duration::try_from_secs_f32/64` (see [1]), which had a
minor breaking change of slightly altering the calculated results. version
1.63 further tweaked this (see [2]).

this commit updates tests to match the new calculated values from 1.63+,
and thus fixes failure running tests in newer stable rust releases and
helps us to fix CI failure. this is done at the expense of breaking the
ability to run the tests with older rust versions, which seems reasonably
acceptable at this time. for the record, the new values used here are
those calculated using version 1.66.

it has been suggested that rather than compare float values directly, it
may be better for this crate to compare via the `float_eq` crate instead.
this would essentially mean switching to a less accurate comparison. since
some time has passed now since i originally encountered this problem, i
think that just updating the values compared against is the best move at
this time, though i am not necessarily against moving to use of `float_eq`
at some point in future if this causes significant problems for users of
older rust versions, or if we encounter further such issues from rust
stdlib changes.

note that in the original issue (see [3]) there were four functions whose
doc-tests were failing, yet only three have needed to be modified here.
the lack of needing to fix the fourth function's tests is presumably as a
result of the changes made in rust v1.63. (the original issue was noticed
with a v1.60 nightly).

Stabilize `duration_checked_float`

This stabilization report is for a stabilization of `duration_checked_float`, tracking issue: rust-lang/rust#83400.

## API Summary

This stabilization report proposes the following API to be stabilized in `core`, along with their re-exports in `std`:

These functions are made const unstable under `duration_consts_float`, tracking issue #72440.

There is an open question in the tracking issue around what the error type should be called which I was hoping to resolve in the context of an FCP.

In this stabilization PR, I have altered the name of the error type to `TryFromFloatSecsError`. In my opinion, the error type shares the name of the method (adjusted to accommodate both types of floats), which is consistent with other error types in `core`, `alloc` and `std` like `TryReserveError` and `TryFromIntError`.

## Experience Report

Code such as this is ready to be converted to a checked API to ensure it is panic free:

This ports the algorithm for constructing `Duration` from floating point
seconds from `std`. The new algorithm in `std` uses bit manipulation to
construct the `Duration` with the most precision possible. Additionally
this adds `saturating` and `checked` variants of those functions.
