Thanks for the pull request, and welcome! The Rust team is excited to review your changes, and you should hear from @dtolnay (or someone else) soon.

If any changes to this PR are deemed necessary, please add them as extra commits. This ensures that the reviewer can see what has changed since they last reviewed the code. Due to the way GitHub handles out-of-date commits, this should also make it reasonably obvious what issues have or haven't been addressed. Large or tricky changes may require several passes of review and changes.

Please see the contribution instructions for more information.

For anyone who wishes to continue to use the try! macro, I recommend using my try! crate: https://crates.io/crates/try

Documentation: https://docs.rs/try/1.0.0/try/

When you use the crate, you get no deprecation warning. Win!

Or do I need to replace #[deprecated] with #[rustc_deprecated]?

Yes, deprecated items in libstd should use rustc_deprecated.

Considering how widely-used this used to be, maybe deprecating it a version or two in the future is a good idea? You can just set the version number to 1.39.0 or so.

The try! macro is mostly unusable on Rust 2018, already deprecated in the documentation, and it is widely known that ? should be used instead. The only issue has been this bug; I think we should deprecate as soon as we can do it.

Sorry, I meant the entire standard library. That includes libcore (and liballoc).

Should this PR fix this error, or would it be better to make a separate one? There are probably some more places this needs to be fixed first, right?

You can use #[allow(deprecated)] on that specific use item since it is a public reexport of try which must be preserved.

@ghost

ghost commented Jul 8, 2019

as expected, there are more places where try! is used.
I could try to fix it, but I am not sure where it is okay to replace try! with ? and where it needs to be preserved. So it would be faster if someone else would jump in 😉

Could somebody please take over this PR?

I am sorry this takes so long. But I didn't think it would be so much to change.
For some reason, I thought I only had to add one line.
But now there are more and more places which need a fix

I'd like to give this a try, however considering I've never messed around with the rustc source before I don't think that I'm gonna be considerably faster than @BO41, however I'd still love to try!

Thanks @hargoniX for showing interest 😃
But it seems that @lzutao already has a working PR ready. Thanks for that 😉
