Fixes some weird travis failures noted on master and in #236 #238

On this line we diff data_old with some other things. Diff-lcs does that[0].encoding which it can't get if it's empty. This pull takes an empty list and puts a single empty string in. This passes the specs but is ugly.

itt: me being terrible. Lemme fix some more.

@alindeman I've gotten myself a bit confused here. This only fixed one of the failures (I thought it'd fix all of them, for some reason....) could you give this a quick glance and tell me if I'm missing something obvious.

@myronmarston @JonRowe @soulcutter may also be able to help 😕

I'm confused here...the last travis build of master passed:

https://travis-ci.org/rspec/rspec-expectations/builds/5874554

Where are you seeing these failures?

@fables-tales

Locally, and also on my other pull (#236). I get the same failures locally on master and on the pull which made me think something was screwy. This only squashes one of them locally, and it's the same one that's missing on travis. I get the same 2 failures that travis gets. I'm really tired and got a bit in deep on this pull so I'm not sure if it's even legit anymore.

I think the build failures are due to a new version of diff-lcs having been released (1.2.2). The last build of rspec-expectations master (which passed) installed 1.2.1:

https://travis-ci.org/rspec/rspec-expectations/jobs/5874556#L82

@halostatue -- any ideas why we'd start getting failures on diff-lcs 1.2.2?

Offhand, no. diff-lcs 1.2.2 was mostly bringing in a bug fix suggested by
the rspec team. I can look at this tomorrow briefly, and longer on the
weekend.

Yeah I'm also going to take a look at this... (I wrote the original version of the bug fix contained in diff-lcs 1.2.2)

diff-lcs 1.2.3 has been released, removing potential blockers for this bug.

Closing this now that conversation has moved to @JonRowe's pull in #239.

=== 1.2.4 / 2013-04-20

* Bugs fixed:
  * A bug was introduced after 1.1.3 when pruning common sequences at the start
    of comparison. Paul Kunysch (@pck) fixed this in pull request 18. Thanks!
    halostatue/diff-lcs#18
* The Rubinius (1.9 mode) bug in rubinius/rubinius#2268 has been fixed by the
  Rubinius team two days after it was filed. Thanks for fixing this so quickly!
  rubinius/rubinius#2268
* Switching to Raggi's hoe-gemspec2 for gemspec generation.

== 1.2.3 / 2013-04-11

* Bugs Fixed:
  * The new encoding detection for diff output generation (added in 1.2.2)
    introduced a bug if the left side of the comparison was the empty set.
    Originally found in rspec/rspec-expectations#238 and
    rspec/rspec-expectations#239. Jon Rowe developed a reasonable heuristic
    (left side, right side, empty string literal) to avoid this bug.
    rspec/rspec-expectations#238
    rspec/rspec-expectations#239
* There is a known issue with Rubinius in 1.9 mode reported in
  rubinius/rubinius#2268 and demonstrated in the Travis CI builds. For all
  other tested platforms, diff-lcs is considered stable. As soon as a suitably
  small test-case can be created for the Rubinius team to examine, this will be
  added to the Rubinius issue around this.

== 1.2.2 / 2013-03-30

* Bugs Fixed:
  * Diff::LCS::Hunk could not properly generate a difference for comparison
    sets that are not US-ASCII-compatible because of the use of literal regular
    expressions and strings. Jon Rowe (JonRowe) found this in
    rspec/rspec-expectations#219 and provided a first pass implementation in
    diff-lcs#15. I've reworked it because of test failures in Rubinius when
    running in Ruby 1.9 mode. This coerces the added values to the encoding of
    the old dataset (as determined by the first piece of the old dataset).
    rspec/rspec-expectations#219
    halostatue/diff-lcs#15
* Adding Travis CI testing for Ruby 2.0.

jsonn pushed a commit to jsonn/pkgsrc that referenced this pull request Oct 11, 2014
=== 1.2.4 / 2013-04-20

* Bugs fixed:

== 1.2.3 / 2013-04-11

* Bugs Fixed:
  * The new encoding detection for diff output generation (added in 1.2.2)
    introduced a bug if the left side of the comparison was the empty set.
    Originally found in rspec/rspec-expectations#238 and
    rspec/rspec-expectations#239. Jon Rowe developed a reasonable heuristic
    (left side, right side, empty string literal) to avoid this bug.
    rspec/rspec-expectations#238
    rspec/rspec-expectations#239
* There is a known issue with Rubinius in 1.9 mode reported in
  rubinius/rubinius#2268 and demonstrated in the Travis CI builds. For all
  other tested platforms, diff-lcs is considered stable. As soon as a suitably
  small test-case can be created for the Rubinius team to examine, this will be
  added to the Rubinius issue around this.

== 1.2.2 / 2013-03-30

* Bugs Fixed:
