I am afraid this package will not work from Monday 30 May. This is because of change in ESS data publishing architecture.

European Social Survey (ESS) data and documentation will only be accessible through the new ESS Data Portal from Monday 30 May.
The cumulative data file for all nine rounds, country-specific data, the ESS Cumulative Data Wizard and the Online Analysis Tool (Nesstar) will no longer be available on this date.

Read more at the ESS announcement The way you access our data is changing.

Noticed that already. What does that mean for this package? Will it be defunct from now on? If not, when can we expect it to work again?

Unfortunately, I don't have enough to rewrite this entirely. If any of you is interested in taking a stab at this I'd be more than willing to review PRs. However, be advised that this seems like a big change in the codebase.

Should this package be archived on CRAN @cimentadaj?

Hi @maelle, I'm still happy to take this on but have been a bit waylaid with life stuff recently! I'll have time to start working on it in the next few weeks.

If @gorcha wants to take a stab then maybe we can wait, otherwise I would archive it.

Thanks both! Yes I suppose if a new CRAN release happens soon-ish it's fine (as the CRAN version cannot work, correct?) 😸

Yep, it's not working at the moment.
