It makes dev / production more similar and allows to easily propagate dev environment changes across developers. Of course, virtualenv approach should still be working.

This was already on our list and I even implemented a simplified solution in one of our projects, however, it wasn't generic and user-friendly enough to be part of the template. There are some issues with using docker with dev env. Maybe, you have solutions for them :)
