Reasons for the request

I am working on a new bioinformatics software tool that performs ultrafast QC. The work is currently hosted on Github: https://github.com/snipe-bio/snipe with a citation handle on Zenodo: https://zenodo.org/records/11170191 and has been cited in https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.07.04.24309921v1.full-text#:~:text=%5B61%5D.%E2%86%B5,Google%20Scholar

The current pypi/snipe has been inactive for 10 years and has not received any updates during this period. In contrast, our new Snipe tool is actively developed and maintained, with a growing user base and significant usage expected following our preprint publication.

Given the extended period of inactivity of the existing package and the substantial active development and community engagement with our new tool, I believe that the retention of the “snipe” name for our project aligns with the principles of PEP 541.

Contact and additional research

I have contacted the maintainer listed on the PyPI package page three times, starting from March 23, 2024, but have not received any response.
