enter unicode characters into edited text

COSMIC Edit displays unicode characters that are not ASCII, e.g., the Greek letters, but there appears to be no way to create them in the editor itself. For example, typing \lambda and then pressing the tab key will produce the Greek character λ in unicode enabled editors that I've used in the past.
