[CODAP] Delays in safari when selecting variables during data collection

Problem description
For phetsims/qa#1099 and phetsims/qa#1096, while in continuous mode, checking and unchecking variables leads to pauses in the sim/CODAP in Safari but not in Chrome.

This still happens in 1.0.5-rc.1 with macOS 15.0.1 and safari 18.0.1 and may even be a bit worse.
As time passes, the pause gets longer when checking variables.
