HIPI stands for "Hadoop Image Processing Interface"

HIPI is a library that sits on top of Apache's Hadoop parallel programming framework (http://hadoop.apache.org/).

HIPI provides an API for efficiently performing large-scale image processing tasks in a distributed computing environment.

HIPI was developed by researchers in the Computer Graphics Group at the University of Virginia.
