Android sample app wont even sync on latest Android Studio Iguana

Can't get the sample app to compile or even Gradle sync, opened the sample_app folder in Android Studio Iguana and no matter what jdk I select I get:

BUG! exception in phase 'semantic analysis' in source unit '_BuildScript_' Unsupported class file major version 61

Hi there,

This project was written a few years ago and I am no longer working on it.

I assume what you need is updating Gradle and the gradle plugin but I don't know if there's any migration required for it.

Alternatively, you could take the kotlin files and just create a new project from scratch.

Happy to review a PR if you want to update this.
