https://tkz.one/@ceferosa/112333196095245726 suggests there should be a default visibility preference for replies (as distinct from new posts)

Note to self: mastodon/mastodon#19685 is the Mastodon feature request for this. Since this is not implemented it's not going to be possible to sync this with the server

Arguably, the existing ones synced with the server shouldn't be. In particular, need to check when that syncing happens, so the user is not given false information.
